MicroEJ® Introduces Its Application Store for IoT

Application Store joins MicroEJ OS, MicroEJ Workbench toolset and MicroEJ Studio to enable app-driven uses and business models on low-cost/ resource-constrained embedded and IoT devices

LAS VEGAS--CES - The newest product from MicroEJ®, the MicroEJ Application Store, will be introduced at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, Nevada. MicroEJ Application Store allows device manufacturers and OEMs to create an ecosystem around their products to serve their customers (device users), application developers, and service providers. As part of this ecosystem, users of MicroEJ-ready devices can extend the functionality of their devices and potentially subscribe to cloud-based services through applications, just as with smartphones and tablets. The company's comprehensive IoT solution portfolio - MicroEJ Application Store, MicroEJ Studio, MicroEJ Workbench, and MicroEJ OS - will be demonstrated at CES.

MicroEJ OS 4 is at the heart of MicroEJ IoT solutions. It's a scalable operating system for resource constrained devices running on 32-bit embedded microcontrollers or microprocessors (typical frequency < GHz, RAM/flash < GB). MicroEJ OS allows devices to run multiple and mixed Java and C/C++ applications and also will run JavaScript in the future. MicroEJ OS supports all IoT standard protocols and frameworks such as MQTT, CoAP, XMPP, etc. The OS engine is very compact (down to 30 KB footprint) and boots in only 2 ms. The OS is scalable, so its services can be built to match hardware capabilities and software needs. MicroEJ OS runs on various processor architectures, including ARM® Cortex®-M and A: from Cortex-M0 with 128 KB flash and 32 KB RAM to Cortex-A9. Device software developers build the customized MicroEJ OS and firmware flashed to their IoT devices with MicroEJ Workbench, a toolset based on Eclipse.

Manufacturers can publish specifications of their MicroEJ-enabled devices on the MicroEJ Application Store. Virtual devices specify precisely the capabilities and set of APIs offered by the built-in MicroEJ OS in order to guide developers of applications for those devices.

End-users can download applications for their MicroEJ-ready devices from the Store. They can install apps either through a mobile app or through the MicroEJ store app embedded in their devices.

Application developers can develop and test applications for the published virtual devices on the Store with MicroEJ Studio, a FREE Java integrated development environment (IDE) built on Eclipse.

The MicroEJ Application Store will open at store.microej.com in Q1 2016 so that application developers can publish their first applications for microcontroller evaluation boards from semiconductor vendors like STMicroelectronics, Renesas Electronics, and NXP Semiconductors.

The MicroEJ Application Store is built on cloud technologies that allow modular and secured deployment as well as scalability of up to a million connections with: container-based architecture, load balancing, user authentication, backup/restore operations, firewall, QoS tracking, and secured communications. Delivered services include: user accounts management; applications and devices management; application build and compliance check against virtual devices; application, virtual device, and firmware publication.

OEMs will be able to license and deploy the MicroEJ Application Store either in the public cloud or their own private clouds, using the MicroEJ brand or their own brand, starting in Q2 2016.
